I’m not a professional photographer, chef, and barely consider myself a food blogger. I’m just an ordinary person who loves to cook, and enjoy sharing my culinary exploits online. Recently, I stumbled upon something revolutionary: AI-generated food photography.

My First Virtual Dish

Having spent countless hours trying to capture the perfect shot of my dishes – adjusting the lighting, arranging garnishes, and then fiddling with filters – the idea of a machine doing all this sounded both thrilling and a little unnerving. I was curious to see how artificial intelligence could possibly replicate the careful craftsmanship that goes into a good food photo.

To test out MidJourney’s platform, I began by inputting my desired dish’s parameters – I chose salmon, one of my favorites. I adjusted the portion size, selected the ingredients, picked a plating style, and set the lighting conditions. I felt like an orchestra conductor, each tweak bringing me closer to the harmony of a perfectly presented dish.

Salmon food art generated with AI
salmon, glazed with a luscious honey dressing, graces the plate, adorned with a scatter of crisp sesame seeds and an elegant topping of finely chopped chives.

Within moments, the AI returned an image that was breathtakingly realistic. The glaze was shiny and sweet, the salmon texture was spot-on, and the chives looked fresh. I was stunned. The virtual salmon was as appealing, if not more, as any I had painstakingly photographed in my kitchen. (if were being honest, probably more)

AI is Democratizing Food Photography

What fascinated me more was that this image wasn’t a copy of an existing photo. It was a unique creation, put together pixel by pixel by the AI. It was as if a ghostly digital chef had prepared and plated an imaginary meal, then a phantom photographer had snapped the perfect shot.

This platform can be a game-changer for people like me. No longer will we need to worry about the sun setting before we get the perfect light, or the ice cream melting while we fiddle with the camera settings. It democratizes food photography, bringing high-quality, appetizing images within everyone’s reach. I could create thousands of images in a day.

Navigating Ethical Questions

Yet, as I was marveling at my AI-generated glazed salmon, a thought crossed my mind. With technology this powerful, how will we know what’s real and what’s not? It’s an ethical question that I believe we must address. We need to ensure transparency, indicating when images are AI-created.

My encounter with MidJourney’s AI-generated food photography was truly remarkable. It allowed me, an average person, to create stunning images without any professional skills or expensive equipment. It opens up a world of possibilities, from experimenting with new food presentation styles to enhancing our online food sharing experiences.

While there may be debates about the authenticity of such images, there’s no denying the impressive technology behind it. As a user, I’m excited about this new frontier in food photography. It’s not a substitute for traditional methods but an innovative tool that brings the art of food photography to the masses. Just remember, don’t try to eat the photos; they may look delicious, but they are still virtual!

Biscuit food art generated with AI

Tomato bisque generated by AI

This side dish showcases whole carrots, baked to perfection and caramelized for a sweet finish, generously drizzled with a heartwarming homemade sauce and topped with nuts and cilantro.

Crispy, Soft, Runny

Fried eggs are a breakfast staple for many, but the process of cooking them can sometimes be messy and frustrating. Fear not, for we have the perfect solution for you – a no-mess fried egg recipe that will have you cooking up a delicious, fuss-free breakfast in no time! Say goodbye to burnt edges and messy stovetops, and welcome to the world of perfectly cooked fried eggs without any unnecessary cleanup. Let’s dive into the steps you need to follow to achieve a flawless, no-mess fried egg, with a runny yolk and just the right amount of seasoning.

No-Mess Fried Egg Recipe Highlights:

  • No-mess: Learn a simple technique to cook a fried egg without creating a mess on your stovetop or leaving a dirty pan.
  • Perfectly cooked: Achieve a deliciously runny yolk and well-cooked egg white, just the way a fried egg should be.
  • Time-saving: With minimal cleanup and easy-to-follow steps, this recipe will have you cooking up a tasty breakfast in no time!

No-Mess Fried Egg Ingredients:

  • 1 large egg (or however many you’re going to cook)(2 for me!)
  • 1 tsp neutral oil (e.g., vegetable oil, canola oil, or avocado oil)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

No-Mess Fried Egg Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare Your Pan Before you begin cooking, make sure your pan is clean and free from any debris or residual oil. A clean pan is essential for achieving a no-mess fried egg, so take a moment to ensure it’s in the best condition possible.

Step 2: Heat Your Pan Place your pan on the stove and heat it over medium heat for a couple of minutes, until it reaches 275°F (125°C). Using a thermometer to measure the temperature will help ensure that your pan is at the ideal heat for cooking your egg without sticking or burning. Once we reach the temperature, turn down the stove. Don’t let your pan get too hot!

Step 3: Add Oil to the Pan Once your pan has reached the desired temperature, drizzle about 1 tsp of neutral oil into it. The oil should spread out quickly and shimmer, indicating that it’s hot enough to cook the egg. Its also important to gently tilt the pan left and right to ensure the oil coats the entire bottom surface.

Add 1tbsp of oil to the pan

Oil spreads immediately out due to the 275F heated pan

Step 4: Crack the Egg Now it’s time to crack your egg into the pan. Discard the eggshells, and wash your hands to remove any residue. Be cautious when cracking the egg to avoid any shell fragments from ending up in the pan.

Step 5: Cook the Egg Allow the egg to cook undisturbed for about 1 minute. The egg white should begin to turn opaque and firm up, while the yolk remains runny.

Step 6: Flip the Egg Using a silicone or metal spatula, carefully slide it under the egg and gently flip it over. Be sure to support the yolk to prevent it from breaking during the flipping process. Cook the egg for another 30 seconds, allowing the yolk to remain runny while the egg white continues to firm up.

Step 7: Transfer the Egg to a Plate Once the egg is cooked to your desired level of doneness, use your spatula to carefully transfer it to a plate.

Clean the hot pan with a paper towel. No mess!
Clean the hot pan with a paper towel. No mess!

Step 8: Clean the Pan Wipe the pan with a paper towel to clean up any residual oil or egg. This simple step will leave your pan clean and ready for its next use, without the need to wash it in the sink.

Step 9: Season the Egg Season your fried egg with a tiny pinch of salt and pepper, adjusting the amount to your personal taste. If you’re making a tostada or a sandwich, I recommend a generous helping of SAUCE. Ranch works well for veggies on tostadas. Chilula is good for breakfast tacos OR sandos. Siracha is great for topping a fried egg over a rice bowl.

Step 10: Enjoy Your No-Mess Fried Egg! With your perfectly cooked, no-mess fried egg. It goes great on a pretzel bun sando, or a tostada or ontop of rice!

Welcome to AirFryerGourmet.com! For those who want great-tasting meals quickly without a lot of fluff.

I would say that neither Luke nor I have amazing kitchen skills. I feel confident enough when tackling basic recipes but when I read words like “rue” and “bechamel” I run in the other direction. If being in the kitchen sometimes feels like an obligation and less of culinary exploration, I get that. Sometimes, you don’t have the time, energy, or motivation to dirty every dish for a complicated and expensive meal. That is where the Air Fryer (and hopefully our blog!) comes in and makes cooking fun again.

Our blog is designed for folks for are comfortable pressing buttons on a microwave but want a little elevation. We use simple ingredients and simple tools (Luke loves his fry chopper!) and dress it up with a little magic brought by the Air Fryer and lots of dipping sauce.

Why do I like the Air Fryer?

I love the Air Fryer because there is no pre-heat time and regardless of the crazy creations that Luke throws in those baskets, the even cooking and the crispiness are always there. It is fun and clean-up is so fast. Our go-to model is the Ninja Foodi dual basket but our recipes work with all models.

Why does Luke like the Air Fryer? (Even if he is lying to himself a bit!)

Luke claims that the convenience of our air fryer makes us eat more vegetables and gives us healthier alternatives. He also claims that it saves big on the grocery bill. While we mainly focus on perfecting our Air Fryer Fries Recipe, other veggies like Air Fryer Zucchini and brussels-sprouts do cook well too I guess.

Join us as we extoll the endless Air Fryer virtues!

We have had so much fun on our Air Fryer journey and want to share our simple ways to take boring weeknight meals to crunchy goodness with a little pizzazz.

And other adventures too!

We also dabble in other creations that you can make in a simple kitchen as well as some food history.

Who is this blog for?

  1. Our moms- who will read it because we asked them to :).
  2. Anyone else looking for fun pictures and easy recipes.

How our blog can be useful to you?

Well, we hope that you feel empowered to try our recipes and tell us of your air frying successes (and failures!- we have had many too, don’t worry. I still am on a mission to get Air Fryer cookies to a non-goopy state but so far, no luck.)

We provide tips and tricks (Luke loves his technique for crispier pizza crust!) and our experiences trying out new ideas, plus great photos!

Wait, why Air Fryer Gourmet???

We believe with a few ingredients and tools, anyone can make gourmet, it is all about perspective.

Happy air frying!

Chicken Drumsticks
Chicken Drumsticks with BBQ sauce

Sweet, Spicy, Goodness.

Luke here. I know you’re wondering why anyone would bother making their own sauce when it’s so convenient to grab some from the grocery store. I’ll tell you why. One, it’s easy, like REALLY easy. Two, it costs less. Three, this IS airfryergourmet.com after all and we only recommend it unless it’s actually worth doing. Four, you can’t even buy this sauce at the grocery store so you’ll never know what you’re missing unless you make it.

This sauce SLAPS. It’s sure to impress at your next cookout or family dinner. Slather it on ribs, brush on grilled chicken, toss chicken drummies to coat, and dip your air fryer fries, (or zucchini fries for my low-calorie/high-BP folks!). This small batch recipe is BOLD with seasonings and flavors.

BBQ Sauce Recipe Highlights:

  • Homemade: Create your very own BBQ sauce from scratch, using simple ingredients for a fresher and more customizable taste.
  • Smaller batch: This recipe is perfect for those who want a smaller quantity of sauce or want to try out different flavor combinations. Larger batch instructions are included down below.
  • One-pot simplicity: Save time by combining all the ingredients at once and cooking over a light to medium flame.
Luke's Sensational Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe
Luke and Arpan’s Sensational Homemade BBQ Sauce Bottle

BBQ Sauce Ingredients:

  • 4 oz ketchup
  • 4 oz brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/32 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp Cholula sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbsp + 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tbsp chili garlic sauce

Step 1: Gather Your BBQ Sauce Ingredients

Before you begin, make sure you have all the ingredients on hand. This recipe uses ketchup, brown sugar, butter, wrights liquid smoke, Worcestershire sauce, Cholula sauce, cayenne pepper, chili powder, and chili garlic sauce.

Step 2: Combine BBQ Sauce Ingredients and Cook

In a saucepan over a light to medium flame, combine all the ingredients.

  • 4 oz ketchup
  • 4 oz brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/32 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp Cholula sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbsp + 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tbsp chili garlic sauce

Now, stir the mixture and scrape the pan about every 30 seconds until all the ingredients are well combined and warmed through. Note that this process allows the flavors to meld together while ensuring the sauce doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. You know you’re done once the sauce bubbles. It only takes a minute or two.

Step 3: Cool and Store the BBQ Sauce

Next, without delay, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the sauce to cool slightly.

If you’ve got hungry mouths to feed, go ahead and brush/pour the sauce all over your dish. Folks are about to get animalistic. Personally, I prefer hot-temperature sauce on top of hot-temperature food for my optimal enjoyment but you’re tastebuds may differ.

If you’re NOT using the sauce immediately, transfer it to a heat-resistant container and store it in the refrigerator for up to a couple of months.

If you really wanna get with the program, message us on our contact page for one of the special original labels.

25 Must-Have Kitchen Utensils

Cooking is an art form, and like all art forms, it requires the right tools to create something truly special. In this detailed guide on the 25 Must-Have Kitchen Utensils, we will look closer at some of the most important kitchen utensils, what we like and don’t like about them, and how they can help you elevate your cooking game. If you want to make amazing fries, you’ll probably need a fry chopper. If you’re on a budget like me, try to find a quality used knife set, often folks don’t know they have very good equipment.

1. Quality Kitchen Knife – $20

  • What we like:
    • A good knife is essential for all types of cooking tasks, from slicing vegetables to carving meats.
    • A high-quality knife can make your prep work faster and more efficiently, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.
    • With proper care and maintenance, a good knife can last a lifetime.
    • You really only need a bread knife, a small knife, and a chef’s knife so find a good one.
  • What we don’t like:
    • High-quality knives can be expensive, which may not be feasible for everyone.
    • Knife sets can be expensive and unnecessary. I recommend quality over quantity.
    • Some people may find it difficult to maintain a sharp edge on their knife, which can make it less effective over time.
    • Improper use of a knife can lead to accidents and injuries, so it’s important to use it with caution and follow proper safety guidelines.

A knife is arguably the most important kitchen utensil. A good knife can make all the difference in the quality and taste of your meals. There are many different types of knives, but the most important ones to have in your kitchen are a chef’s knife, a paring knife, and a serrated knife. A chef’s knife is the workhorse of the kitchen, and it’s ideal for slicing, dicing, and chopping vegetables, meats, and herbs.

When choosing a knife, it’s important to consider the quality of the blade, the handle, and the overall balance of the knife. High-quality knives can be expensive, but they are an investment that will last a lifetime if properly cared for. You should also invest in a good sharpening stone or a honing rod to keep your knife sharp and effective.

2. Quality Kitchen Shears – $20

  • What we like:
    • Kitchen shears are versatile and can be used for a wide range of tasks, from cutting meat to snipping herbs.
    • They are generally more efficient and safer than using a knife for certain tasks, such as trimming fat or cutting through poultry bones.
    • Many shears come apart for easy cleaning, making them as hygienic as other cutting tools.
  • What we don’t like:
    • Poor-quality shears can be difficult to use and can lead to uneven cuts.
    • Some shears can be challenging to sharpen, which can reduce their effectiveness over time.

Kitchen shears are a versatile and essential tool in any kitchen. They can be used for a wide range of tasks, from trimming meat and poultry to snipping herbs and cutting through packaging. When choosing shears, it’s important to look for a pair that is comfortable to hold and easy to use. You should also consider the quality of the blades and whether they can be easily disassembled for cleaning. It’s important to follow proper safety guidelines and to use shears with caution.

4. Instant-Read Thermometer – $15

  • What we like:
    • An instant-read thermometer allows you to quickly and accurately measure the internal temperature of food, ensuring that it is cooked to a safe and delicious level.
    • Labels printed on the thermometer tell you the safe temperature to cook poultry, steak, or pork.
    • It’s easy to use and can be used for a wide range of foods, from meats to baked goods.
    • A good instant-read thermometer is durable and can last for years with proper care.
  • What we don’t like:
    • Poor-quality instant-read thermometers can be less reliable, leading to overcooked or undercooked food.
    • Some people may prefer to rely on their own senses to determine when food is done cooking, rather than using a thermometer.

An instant-read thermometer is an essential tool in any kitchen. It allows you to quickly and accurately measure the internal temperature of food, ensuring that it is cooked to a safe and delicious level. When choosing an instant-read thermometer, it’s important to look for one that is easy to read, accurate, and durable and has cooking temperatures for poultry, steak, or pork on it.

One important thing to keep in mind is that an instant-read thermometer should be inserted into the thickest part of the food, away from any bones or fat.

Understanding Warm and Cool Spices

Spices can be broadly categorized into two groups: warm spices and cool spices. This distinction is based on the flavor profiles of the spices and their impact on the overall taste of a dish.

Warm spices, as the name suggests, provide a warm, rich, and comforting flavor to your dishes. They often have a sweet or slightly pungent taste and are commonly used in winter dishes, baked goods, and hearty meals. Examples of warm spices include cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, and ginger.

Cool spices, on the other hand, provide a bright, refreshing, and uplifting flavor to your dishes. They often have a slightly bitter or tangy taste and are commonly used in summer dishes, salads, and lighter meals. Examples of cool spices include mint, coriander, fennel seeds, and dill.

When seasoning your air-fried dishes, consider the balance of warm and cool spices to create a harmonious and well-rounded flavor profile. The key is experimenting with different combinations to find the perfect blend that suits your taste buds.

Exploring Middle Eastern Spices

Middle Eastern cuisine is known for its bold and diverse flavors, thanks to the use of various unique spices. Here are some standout Middle Eastern spices that you can use to elevate your air-fried dishes:

  1. Cumin: Cumin is a warm spice with a slightly earthy and bitter flavor. It’s commonly used in Middle Eastern, Indian, and Mexican cuisines and is a key ingredient in spice blends like garam masala and taco seasoning. Cumin pairs well with vegetables, meats, and legumes.
  2. Shawarma: Shawarma is a Middle Eastern spice blend typically used to season grilled meats. It usually contains a mix of warm spices like cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, and cinnamon, along with garlic powder, onion powder, and other herbs. Shawarma seasoning can also be used to flavor vegetables, rice, and other dishes in your air fryer.
  3. Sumac: Sumac is a tangy, slightly tart spice that adds a vibrant, citrusy flavor to your dishes. It’s commonly used in Middle Eastern cooking as a seasoning for salads, grilled meats, and rice dishes. In your air fryer, try sprinkling sumac on vegetables, fish, or chicken for a refreshing twist.
  4. Za’atar: Za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice blend that combines thyme, sumac, sesame seeds, and other herbs. It has a nutty, tangy, and slightly earthy flavor that works well with various dishes. Steak Seasonings for Veggies

Steak seasonings are a blend of spices like garlic powder, salt, paprika, and black pepper, making them great for vegetables. The bold flavors of steak seasonings can add depth and complexity to your veggies without overpowering or oversalting them.

Try using a dash of steak seasoning on air-fried fries, mushrooms, brussels sprouts, zucchini, bell peppers, or even cauliflower for a delicious and satisfying side dish.

The Versatility of Taco Seasoning and Cumin

Taco seasoning and cumin are versatile spices that can add a burst of flavor to a wide range of dishes. The combination of earthy cumin, zesty chili powder, and aromatic oregano found in taco seasoning makes it an excellent choice. Try using a dash of taco seasoning on air-fried chicken, shrimp, or potato fries for a twist.

Cumin, as mentioned earlier, is a warm spice with an earthy and slightly bitter flavor. It’s a key ingredient in many spice blends and is particularly well-suited to air-fried dishes. Cumin’s flavor profile makes it a fantastic addition to dishes like air-fried chickpeas, roasted vegetables, and marinated meats.

The Art of Balancing Spices

When seasoning your air-fried dishes, it’s essential to strike the right balance between flavors. Overdoing it with spices can lead to an overpowering taste, while under-seasoning can result in a bland and unexciting dish.

Here are some tips to help you find the perfect balance:

  1. Taste test: If you’re unsure about the flavor of a particular spice or how much to use, try tasting a small amount on its own to get a sense of its potency. This will help you gauge how much to add to your dish.
  2. Start small: When experimenting with new spices or blends, start with a small amount and gradually build up the flavor. This approach allows you to fine-tune the seasoning to your liking without overdoing it.
  3. Follow a recipe: If you’re new to using spices or unsure about the right combination, follow a trusted recipe to get started. As you become more comfortable with the flavors and proportions, you can begin to adjust the seasoning to suit your taste preferences.
  4. Trust your instincts: As you become more familiar with various spices and their flavors, trust your instincts when seasoning your dishes. Your taste buds are the best guide to creating a well-balanced and delicious meal.

Seasoning Tips for Air Fryer Cooking

When seasoning your air-fried dishes, follow these simple steps to ensure an even and flavorful coating:

  1. Add food to the air fryer basket first: Before adding any seasonings or oil, place your food items in the air fryer basket to gauge the amount of space and the best arrangement for even cooking.
  2. Drizzle with neutral oil: Using a bottle with an oil spout, give your food items three good flicks of neutral oil, such as vegetable or canola oil. This will help the spices adhere to the food and promote even cooking.
  3. Sprinkle on the spice mix: With your food and oil in place, sprinkle your chosen spice mix over the items in the basket. Be sure to distribute the spices evenly for a consistent flavor throughout.
  4. Toss or jiggle the basket: Gently toss or jiggle the air fryer basket to ensure the oil and spices coat the food items evenly. This will help to create a uniform flavor and texture in your finished dish.

Experimenting with spices is one of the best ways to elevate your air-fried dishes. By exploring the world of Middle Eastern seasonings and mastering the art of balancing flavors, you’ll be well on your way to creating air fryer meals that are both delicious and memorable.

Juicy, Heavenly, Balanced.

If you came to me last week and said “Hey Luke, would you ever write an article about a bacon-cheese chicken pickle recipe?” I would reply with a prompt “No. Why?” But a lot can change in a week. Three times, I’ve housed this treat and I can’t believe I’m saying this but it is honestly one of my favorite uses for bacon. It’s even Amy Approved! If you’re like me, you use bacon once for a recipe and then kind of just forget about it for the rest of the week as it seems “ughhh unhealthy”. Let me tell ya, this is better than any of that good ol’ eggs and bacon breakfast, it’s juicy and delicious.

This recipe is all about balance. This is the epitome of what we try to achieve on this blog. Heavenly(not healthy!) taste, earthly effort. Spicy pickle, juicy chicken, crispy bacon, and salty cheese all come together in a heavenly pairing and it takes less time than cooking bacon on the stove. If you’re feeling hungry, make two. I’m 6’3″ and I’ve found that one of these is about half a meal. I have no problem demolishing two, especially with Amy here.

Ingredients

  • 2 pickles (dill or bread and butter, depending on your preference)
  • 2 chicken tenders, raw
  • 2 cheese sticks (such as mozzarella or cheddar)
  • 2 slices of bacon (thin-cut works best)
  • Your favorite dipping sauces (BBQ sauce, Chick-fil-A sauce, mustard, ketchup, etc.)

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

You’ll need pickles, raw chicken tenders, cheese sticks, a cutting board, and bacon. For the pickles, you can use bread and butter(where my people at!) or Dill if you want I guess. Your life, not mine. For cheese, grab a favorite of the kids, string cheese! whatever flavor you like, it’s hard to go wrong here.

Step 2: Assemble the Bacon-Wrapped Cheese Chicken Pickles

To assemble your bacon-wrapped cheese chicken pickles, follow these simple steps:

  1. Lay a chicken tender flat on a clean cutting board.
  2. Place a cheese stick on top of the chicken tender.
  3. Add a pickle on top of the cheese stick.
  4. On the left side of your stack, lay a piece of bacon at a slight angle on the cutting board
  5. Carefully roll the Cheese-chicken-Pickle away from you and pick up the slice of bacon as you go. Make sure to cover the entire length of the pickle and chicken tender, overlapping the bacon slightly as you wrap. This will help hold everything together during cooking. Note: it doesn’t have to be super tight but should not be loose either.

Repeat this process for both bacon-wrapped cheese chicken pickles.

Step 3: Cook in the Air Fryer

Place two assembled bacon-wrapped cheese chicken pickles in the air fryer basket. Set the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 20 minutes. Note: no need to preheat the air fryer. Remember to wash your hands with soap after handling raw meat.

Step 4: Check the Chicken’s Internal Temperature

Before removing the bacon-wrapped cheese chicken pickles from the air fryer, open the basket and check the internal temperature of the chicken using a meat thermometer. The chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) at the thickest part to be considered fully cooked and safe to eat. Don’t worry about it drying out, the pickle will keep it juicy.

Step 5: Sauce and Serve

Once the bacon-wrapped cheese chicken pickles have finished cooking, transfer them to a serving plate and serve with two or three of your favorite dipping sauces. BBQ sauce, Chick-fil-A sauce, mustard, and ketchup are all popular choices, but feel free to experiment with other options as well.

Air fryers make it easy to cook these tasty treats, ensuring a perfectly crispy finish without the mess and hassle of traditional frying methods. Plus, with our quick and easy “no wet hands” cleaning method below, you’ll spend less time cleaning up and more time enjoying your delicious creation.

So, go ahead and give this unique recipe a try – you might just find that it becomes a new favorite in your snack repertoire. And don’t forget to get creative with your dipping sauce selections, as the possibilities are truly endless! Happy snacking!

Step 6: Quick and Easy Cleanup

While the air fryer basket is still hot, clean it using our “no wet hands” method, which only takes 30 seconds. This method is perfect for those who don’t want the hassle of hand-washing dishes. Follow the steps outlined in our previous blog post on air fryer cleaning techniques, and you’ll have a spotless basket in no time. You can even clean two baskets at once by using one in each hand.

To start, while the basket is still hot, give one squirt of soap into the dirty basket.

Finally, insert the basket back into the air fryer. No need to dry the basket with a towel – residual heat in the air fryer will do the trick!

Crunchy, Salty, Delicious Fries.

I will be the first to admit that I was skeptical of the Air Fryer’s capacity to make crunchy, salty, delicious fries. I figured there was no way to recreate all that favor without a vat of oil, fry baskets, and a good dose of artery-clogging.

Our first batches of Air Fryer fries were, shall we say, uninspired. Tiny limp shoe laces that we chew and chewed as we got to the raw potato in the middle. At the time, we didn’t think there was more to recreating fries than slicing the potatoes and salting them- how wrong we were! Eventually Luke did some research and with just a few adjustments (better seasoning was a GAME CHANGER) we were quickly able to elevate our french fry game! We wanted to share our tips with you so you don’t have to sit through batches of unsatisfying starchy experiments (I think we did enough of that on behalf of everybody.) Plus the cleanup isn’t too bad! Read on for a few ways to make your Air Fryer fries as good as the real thing!

Air Fryer Fries Ingredients

  • 1 Bag Russet Potatoes
  • Neutral or Vegetable oil
  • Pinch of salt
  • Fry sauce
  • Cheese (if you are feeling fancy, we like queso fresco, but any mild shredded cheese will do!)
  • Chopped Parsley(optional)

Step 1: Selecting the Perfect Potatoes

The right potato makes a difference and luckily for us, the cheapest potato (the beloved russet) does well here!! You can also use Yukon Gold, but if you find yourself on a budget (or just cheap bastards like us) a 10-pound bag of russets is the way to go.

Luke says these types of potatoes have a good balance of starch and moisture which I believe, science jargon aside, means they are capable of getting crispy, especially when thin-sliced, and the middle can get fluffy which is also very important. Nothing is worse than a mouthful of raw potato when you are looking for light and crunchy goodness (just take our word for it.)

Step 2: Prepare Your Air Fryer Fries

Luke washes the potatoes first (I should do the same as cleanliness is important and all, but I never have the patience. So I skip this step but don’t be like me unless you don’t mind a more earthy flavor to your fries…and I suppose there are health risks as well, so just wash your taters, folks, and pay no mind to my bad habits.)

You don’t have to peel your potatoes which is great and fits into my life style of doing things in the kitchen as quickly as possible!

Luke loves his kitchen gadgets so we have sacrificed precious counter space for this vegetable chopper (pictured above.) At first, I thought, men and their toys and did a mental eye roll, but this one is well worth the square foot of space it takes up. Super easy and fun to use and definitely shortens the process.

If you find yourself without a commercial chopper as most normal people do, don’t worry, we get it. Just make 1/2-inch slices and try to cut them as evenly as you can.

Once chopped, place the fries in a large bowl and cover them with water. This is an important step!! For all the kitchen-challenged people out there like me, this may seem superfluous but it isn’t! Soaking the fries in the fridge removes excess starch, which helps achieve a crispier texture. The crisp is what it is all about so make sure you allow the fries to soak for at least 30 minutes but pro tip: you can leave the fries soaking in the fridge for up to a week and use them as needed during your meals.

Step 3: Cooking Your Air Fryer Fries

Once your fries have had their cleansing bath and spa treatment, they are ready to be sacrificed for the greater good. We have found 12 x 1/2-inch fries make about half a meal’s worth, so for two people, you’ll want to prepare 24 fries, roughly one air fryer basket’s worth.

Use a salad spinner (another Luke kitchen gadget) to remove excess moisture from the fries. If you (unsurprisingly) find yourself without a salad spinner, a towel will do the trick. You are just trying to get rid of any excess moisture still clinging to the potatoes.

Now, for the fun part! Dump those babies in the air fryer basket, and give them three good flicks of neutral oil (such as vegetable oil or canola oil) using an oil spout (yet another Luke kitchen gadget). For us normal people, I take the cap of the oil container and use that to toss or jiggle the fries in the basket until they are evenly coated in oil. All roads lead to Rome here, just get enough oil on the fries because, without it, things do NOT go well (I speak from personal experience.)

Angled view pouring a small amount of vegetable oil into the air fryer basket filed with fries.

Set your air fryer to cook for 20 minutes. For the crispiest results, make sure each fry has a bit of room in the basket (we recommend cooking about 12 fries per basket). Pro-tip for those who have mastery of the Air Fryer is to use this cooking time to clean/prep your main dish for this meal.

Step 4: Seasoning and Serving Air Fryer Fries

Once your fries have finished cooking, remove the air fryer basket and add a pinch of salt to taste. Toss or jiggle the basket to ensure the fries are coated evenly. Honestly, I know the amount of straight-up “jiggling” of the basket we seem to do, might feel weird but it is necessary! You should take advantage of the high walls of the basket to thoroughly coat things without making a mess.

Next, is the best part and where you can do a few simple things to make your simple fries fancy AF. Transfer your Air Fryer Fries to a plate, and serve them alongside two or three of your favorite dipping sauces. We recently discovered the bottled Chick-fil-A sauce sold at the grocery store and lemme tell you- GAME OVER! Other popular choices include BBQ sauce, mustard, and ketchup, but feel free to get creative with your sauce selection.

Recently we had a small family gathering and we got a lot of “oohs” and “ahs” with our fries once we added chopped parsley and sprinkled crumbled queso fresco over the pile and drizzled sauce on everything to finish. We let everyone marvel at our creation before revealing our special sauce was just Chick-fil-A sauce.

Don’t forget! Salt is your best friend! Sprinkle on when fries are fresh and hot. Sorry to all my high BP people and sodium watchers over there, we still send our love to you! You can check out other seasoning combinations in our spices and seasonings guide.)

Lastly, dig in! I am always surprised at all quickly they go but air fryer fries are here for a good time, not for a long time. Eat ’em while they are fresh as they don’t hold well and feel slightly better about them because they weren’t fried in oil.

We can’t imagine a more beautiful thing. Be sure to share this Air Fryer Fries Recipe with your friends!

Step 5: Quick and Easy Cleanup

In an effort to reduce kitchen time as much as possible, while the air fryer basket is still hot, clean it using our “no wet hands” method, which only takes 30 seconds. I freakin’ hate doing dishes (doesn’t everyone?) so this method is much preferred to scrubbing caked-on potato bits at the end of the night. Follow the steps outlined in our previous blog post on air fryer cleaning techniques, and you’ll have a spotless basket in no time.

To start, while the basket is still hot, give one squirt of soap into the dirty basket.
