Understanding Warm and Cool Spices

Spices can be broadly categorized into two groups: warm spices and cool spices. This distinction is based on the flavor profiles of the spices and their impact on the overall taste of a dish.

Warm spices, as the name suggests, provide a warm, rich, and comforting flavor to your dishes. They often have a sweet or slightly pungent taste and are commonly used in winter dishes, baked goods, and hearty meals. Examples of warm spices include cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, and ginger.

Cool spices, on the other hand, provide a bright, refreshing, and uplifting flavor to your dishes. They often have a slightly bitter or tangy taste and are commonly used in summer dishes, salads, and lighter meals. Examples of cool spices include mint, coriander, fennel seeds, and dill.

When seasoning your air-fried dishes, consider the balance of warm and cool spices to create a harmonious and well-rounded flavor profile. The key is experimenting with different combinations to find the perfect blend that suits your taste buds.

Exploring Middle Eastern Spices

Middle Eastern cuisine is known for its bold and diverse flavors, thanks to the use of various unique spices. Here are some standout Middle Eastern spices that you can use to elevate your air-fried dishes:

  1. Cumin: Cumin is a warm spice with a slightly earthy and bitter flavor. It’s commonly used in Middle Eastern, Indian, and Mexican cuisines and is a key ingredient in spice blends like garam masala and taco seasoning. Cumin pairs well with vegetables, meats, and legumes.
  2. Shawarma: Shawarma is a Middle Eastern spice blend typically used to season grilled meats. It usually contains a mix of warm spices like cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, and cinnamon, along with garlic powder, onion powder, and other herbs. Shawarma seasoning can also be used to flavor vegetables, rice, and other dishes in your air fryer.
  3. Sumac: Sumac is a tangy, slightly tart spice that adds a vibrant, citrusy flavor to your dishes. It’s commonly used in Middle Eastern cooking as a seasoning for salads, grilled meats, and rice dishes. In your air fryer, try sprinkling sumac on vegetables, fish, or chicken for a refreshing twist.
  4. Za’atar: Za’atar is a Middle Eastern spice blend that combines thyme, sumac, sesame seeds, and other herbs. It has a nutty, tangy, and slightly earthy flavor that works well with various dishes. Use za’atar as a seasoning for air-fried vegetables, and meats, or even as a topping for flatbreads and dips.

Steak Seasonings for Veggies

Steak seasonings are a blend of spices like garlic powder, salt, paprika, and black pepper, making them great for vegetables. The bold flavors of steak seasonings can add depth and complexity to your veggies without overpowering or oversalting them.

Try using a dash of steak seasoning on air-fried fries, mushrooms, brussels sprouts, zucchini, bell peppers, or even cauliflower for a delicious and satisfying side dish.

The Versatility of Taco Seasoning and Cumin

Taco seasoning and cumin are versatile spices that can add a burst of flavor to a wide range of dishes. The combination of earthy cumin, zesty chili powder, and aromatic oregano found in taco seasoning makes it an excellent choice. Try using a dash of taco seasoning on air-fried chicken, shrimp, or potato fries for a twist.

Cumin, as mentioned earlier, is a warm spice with an earthy and slightly bitter flavor. It’s a key ingredient in many spice blends and is particularly well-suited to air-fried dishes. Cumin’s flavor profile makes it a fantastic addition to dishes like air-fried chickpeas, roasted vegetables, and marinated meats.

The Art of Balancing Spices

When seasoning your air-fried dishes, it’s essential to strike the right balance between flavors. Overdoing it with spices can lead to an overpowering taste, while under-seasoning can result in a bland and unexciting dish.

Here are some tips to help you find the perfect balance:

  1. Taste test: If you’re unsure about the flavor of a particular spice or how much to use, try tasting a small amount on its own to get a sense of its potency. This will help you gauge how much to add to your dish.
  2. Start small: When experimenting with new spices or blends, start with a small amount and gradually build up the flavor. This approach allows you to fine-tune the seasoning to your liking without overdoing it.
  3. Follow a recipe: If you’re new to using spices or unsure about the right combination, follow a trusted recipe to get started. As you become more comfortable with the flavors and proportions, you can begin to adjust the seasoning to suit your taste preferences.
  4. Trust your instincts: As you become more familiar with various spices and their flavors, trust your instincts when seasoning your dishes. Your taste buds are the best guide to creating a well-balanced and delicious meal.

Seasoning Tips for Air Fryer Cooking

When seasoning your air-fried dishes, follow these simple steps to ensure an even and flavorful coating:

  1. Add food to the air fryer basket first: Before adding any seasonings or oil, place your food items in the air fryer basket to gauge the amount of space and the best arrangement for even cooking.
  2. Drizzle with neutral oil: Using a bottle with an oil spout, give your food items three good flicks of neutral oil, such as vegetable or canola oil. This will help the spices adhere to the food and promote even cooking.
  3. Sprinkle on the spice mix: With your food and oil in place, sprinkle your chosen spice mix over the items in the basket. Be sure to distribute the spices evenly for a consistent flavor throughout.
  4. Toss or jiggle the basket: Gently toss or jiggle the air fryer basket to ensure the oil and spices coat the food items evenly. This will help to create a uniform flavor and texture in your finished dish.

Experimenting with spices is one of the best ways to elevate your air-fried dishes. By exploring the world of Middle Eastern seasonings and mastering the art of balancing flavors, you’ll be well on your way to creating air fryer meals that are both delicious and memorable.

Juicy, Heavenly, Balanced.

If you came to me last week and said “Hey Luke, would you ever write an article about a bacon-cheese chicken pickle recipe?” I would reply with a prompt “No. Why?” But a lot can change in a week. Three times, I’ve housed this treat and I can’t believe I’m saying this but it is honestly one of my favorite uses for bacon. It’s even Amy Approved! If you’re like me, you use bacon once for a recipe and then kind of just forget about it for the rest of the week as it seems “ughhh unhealthy”. Let me tell ya, this is better than any of that good ol’ eggs and bacon breakfast, it’s juicy and delicious.

This recipe is all about balance. This is the epitome of what we try to achieve on this blog. Heavenly(not healthy!) taste, earthly effort. Spicy pickle, juicy chicken, crispy bacon, and salty cheese all come together in a heavenly pairing and it takes less time than cooking bacon on the stove. If you’re feeling hungry, make two. I’m 6’3″ and I’ve found that one of these is about half a meal. I have no problem demolishing two, especially with Amy here.

Ingredients

  • 2 pickles (dill or bread and butter, depending on your preference)
  • 2 chicken tenders, raw
  • 2 cheese sticks (such as mozzarella or cheddar)
  • 2 slices of bacon (thin-cut works best)
  • Your favorite dipping sauces (BBQ sauce, Chick-fil-A sauce, mustard, ketchup, etc.)
Top View of Bacon Cheese Chicken Pickle
Top View of Bacon Cheese Chicken Pickle

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

You’ll need pickles, raw chicken tenders, cheese sticks, a cutting board, and bacon. For the pickles, you can use bread and butter(where my people at!) or Dill if you want I guess. Your life, not mine. For cheese, grab a favorite of the kids, string cheese! whatever flavor you like, it’s hard to go wrong here.

Step 2: Assemble the Bacon-Wrapped Cheese Chicken Pickles

To assemble your bacon-wrapped cheese chicken pickles, follow these simple steps:

  1. Lay a chicken tender flat on a clean cutting board.
  2. Place a cheese stick on top of the chicken tender.
  3. Add a pickle on top of the cheese stick.
  4. On the left side of your stack, lay a piece of bacon at a slight angle on the cutting board
  5. Carefully roll the Cheese-chicken-Pickle away from you and pick up the slice of bacon as you go. Make sure to cover the entire length of the pickle and chicken tender, overlapping the bacon slightly as you wrap. This will help hold everything together during cooking. Note: it doesn’t have to be super tight but should not be loose either.

Repeat this process for both bacon-wrapped cheese chicken pickles.

Step 3: Cook in the Air Fryer

Place two assembled bacon-wrapped cheese chicken pickles in the air fryer basket. Set the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 20 minutes. Note: no need to preheat the air fryer. Remember to wash your hands with soap after handling raw meat.

Step 4: Check the Chicken’s Internal Temperature

Before removing the bacon-wrapped cheese chicken pickles from the air fryer, open the basket and check the internal temperature of the chicken using a meat thermometer. The chicken should reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) at the thickest part to be considered fully cooked and safe to eat. Don’t worry about it drying out, the pickle will keep it juicy.

Step 5: Sauce and Serve

Once the bacon-wrapped cheese chicken pickles have finished cooking, transfer them to a serving plate and serve with two or three of your favorite dipping sauces. BBQ sauce, Chick-fil-A sauce, mustard, and ketchup are all popular choices, but feel free to experiment with other options as well.

Air fryers make it easy to cook these tasty treats, ensuring a perfectly crispy finish without the mess and hassle of traditional frying methods. Plus, with our quick and easy “no wet hands” cleaning method below, you’ll spend less time cleaning up and more time enjoying your delicious creation.

So, go ahead and give this unique recipe a try – you might just find that it becomes a new favorite in your snack repertoire. And don’t forget to get creative with your dipping sauce selections, as the possibilities are truly endless! Happy snacking!

Step 6: Quick and Easy Cleanup

While the air fryer basket is still hot, clean it using our “no wet hands” method, which only takes 30 seconds. This method is perfect for those who don’t want the hassle of hand-washing dishes. Follow the steps outlined in our previous blog post on air fryer cleaning techniques, and you’ll have a spotless basket in no time. You can even clean two baskets at once by using one in each hand.

To start, while the basket is still hot, give one squirt of soap into the dirty basket.

Crunchy, Salty, Delicious Fries.

I will be the first to admit that I was skeptical of the Air Fryer’s capacity to make crunchy, salty, delicious fries. I figured there was no way to recreate all that favor without a vat of oil, fry baskets, and a good dose of artery-clogging.

Our first batches of Air Fryer fries were, shall we say, uninspired. Tiny limp shoe laces that we chew and chewed as we got to the raw potato in the middle. At the time, we didn’t think there was more to recreating fries than slicing the potatoes and salting them- how wrong we were! Eventually Luke did some research and with just a few adjustments (better seasoning was a GAME CHANGER) we were quickly able to elevate our french fry game! We wanted to share our tips with you so you don’t have to sit through batches of unsatisfying starchy experiments (I think we did enough of that on behalf of everybody.) Plus the cleanup isn’t too bad! Read on for a few ways to make your Air Fryer fries as good as the real thing!

Air Fryer Fries Ingredients

  • 1 Bag Russet Potatoes
  • Neutral or Vegetable oil
  • Pinch of salt
  • Fry sauce
  • Cheese (if you are feeling fancy, we like queso fresco, but any mild shredded cheese will do!)
  • Chopped Parsley(optional)
Top view of a bag of Russet Potatoes
Top view of a bag of Russet Potatoes

Step 1: Selecting the Perfect Potatoes

The right potato makes a difference and luckily for us, the cheapest potato (the beloved russet) does well here!! You can also use Yukon Gold, but if you find yourself on a budget (or just cheap bastards like us) a 10-pound bag of russets is the way to go.

Luke says these types of potatoes have a good balance of starch and moisture which I believe, science jargon aside, means they are capable of getting crispy, especially when thin-sliced, and the middle can get fluffy which is also very important. Nothing is worse than a mouthful of raw potato when you are looking for light and crunchy goodness (just take our word for it.)

Step 2: Prepare Your Air Fryer Fries

Luke washes the potatoes first (I should do the same as cleanliness is important and all, but I never have the patience. So I skip this step but don’t be like me unless you don’t mind a more earthy flavor to your fries…and I suppose there are health risks as well, so just wash your taters, folks, and pay no mind to my bad habits.)

You don’t have to peel your potatoes which is great and fits into my life style of doing things in the kitchen as quickly as possible!

Front view of a Commercial grade 1/2in Fry Chopper.
Front view of a commercial grade 1/2in Fry Chopper.

Luke loves his kitchen gadgets so we have sacrificed precious counter space for this vegetable chopper (pictured above.) At first, I thought, men and their toys and did a mental eye roll, but this one is well worth the square foot of space it takes up. Super easy and fun to use and definitely shortens the process.

If you find yourself without a commercial chopper as most normal people do, don’t worry, we get it. Just make 1/2-inch slices and try to cut them as evenly as you can.

Once chopped, place the fries in a large bowl and cover them with water. This is an important step!! For all the kitchen-challenged people out there like me, this may seem superfluous but it isn’t! Soaking the fries in the fridge removes excess starch, which helps achieve a crispier texture. The crisp is what it is all about so make sure you allow the fries to soak for at least 30 minutes but pro tip: you can leave the fries soaking in the fridge for up to a week and use them as needed during your meals.

Top view of a water bowl for soaking fries.
Top view of a water bowl for soaking fries.

Step 3: Cooking Your Air Fryer Fries

Once your fries have had their cleansing bath and spa treatment, they are ready to be sacrificed for the greater good. We have found 12 x 1/2-inch fries make about half a meal’s worth, so for two people, you’ll want to prepare 24 fries, roughly one air fryer basket’s worth.

Angled view of a salad spinner removing excess water from Fries.
Angled view of a salad spinner removing excess water from Fries.

Use a salad spinner (another Luke kitchen gadget) to remove excess moisture from the fries. If you (unsurprisingly) find yourself without a salad spinner, a towel will do the trick. You are just trying to get rid of any excess moisture still clinging to the potatoes.

Angled view of 1/2in Fries in an Air Fryer basket.

Now, for the fun part! Dump those babies in the air fryer basket, and give them three good flicks of neutral oil (such as vegetable oil or canola oil) using an oil spout (yet another Luke kitchen gadget). For us normal people, I take the cap of the oil container and use that to toss or jiggle the fries in the basket until they are evenly coated in oil. All roads lead to Rome here, just get enough oil on the fries because, without it, things do NOT go well (I speak from personal experience.)

Angled view pouring a small amount of vegetable oil into the air fryer basket filed with fries.
Angled view of an air fryer basket filled with fries with a small amount of vegetable oil being poured into it.

Set your air fryer to cook for 20 minutes. For the crispiest results, make sure each fry has a bit of room in the basket (we recommend cooking about 12 fries per basket). Pro-tip for those who have mastery of the Air Fryer is to use this cooking time to clean/prep your main dish for this meal.

Step 4: Seasoning and Serving Air Fryer Fries

Once your fries have finished cooking, remove the air fryer basket and add a pinch of salt to taste. Toss or jiggle the basket to ensure the fries are coated evenly. Honestly, I know the amount of straight-up “jiggling” of the basket we seem to do, might feel weird but it is necessary! You should take advantage of the high walls of the basket to thoroughly coat things without making a mess.

Next, is the best part and where you can do a few simple things to make your simple fries fancy AF. Transfer your Air Fryer Fries to a plate, and serve them alongside two or three of your favorite dipping sauces. We recently discovered the bottled Chick-fil-A sauce sold at the grocery store and lemme tell you- GAME OVER! Other popular choices include BBQ sauce, mustard, and ketchup, but feel free to get creative with your sauce selection.

Recently we had a small family gathering and we got a lot of “oohs” and “ahs” with our fries once we added chopped parsley and sprinkled crumbled queso fresco over the pile and drizzled sauce on everything to finish. We let everyone marvel at our creation before revealing our special sauce was just Chick-fil-A sauce.

Don’t forget! Salt is your best friend! Sprinkle on when fries are fresh and hot. Sorry to all my high BP people and sodium watchers over there, we still send our love to you! You can check out other seasoning combinations in our spices and seasonings guide.)

Top View of crispy Air Fryer Fries topped with delicious Chick Fil A sauce, parsley, and crumbly cheese.
Top View of crispy Air Fryer Fries topped with delicious Chick Fil A sauce, parsley, and crumbly cheese.

Lastly, dig in! I am always surprised at all quickly they go but air fryer fries are here for a good time, not for a long time. Eat ’em while they are fresh as they don’t hold well and feel slightly better about them because they weren’t fried in oil.

We can’t imagine a more beautiful thing. Be sure to share this Air Fryer Fries Recipe with your friends!

Step 5: Quick and Easy Cleanup

In an effort to reduce kitchen time as much as possible, while the air fryer basket is still hot, clean it using our “no wet hands” method, which only takes 30 seconds. I freakin’ hate doing dishes (doesn’t everyone?) so this method is much preferred to scrubbing caked-on potato bits at the end of the night. Follow the steps outlined in our previous blog post on air fryer cleaning techniques, and you’ll have a spotless basket in no time.

The Fast and Easy Air Fryer Cleaning Technique

Air fryers have revolutionized our kitchens and cooking habits, offering delicious, healthy meals like our fries recipe in a fraction of the time as an oven or other conventional methods. But just like any other kitchen utensil, keeping an air fryer clean is essential for optimal performance and longevity. Don’t worry, though, because we’ve got you covered with a super-fast and easy cleaning method that requires minimal water contact. Say goodbye to tedious scrubbing and hello to more time enjoying your air-fried creations!

This method is designed to be a quick and efficient way to clean your air fryer without the need for constant hand washing. It’s perfect for those busy days when you just want to enjoy your meal and move on to other tasks. So, let’s dive into the steps for this hassle-free cleaning process:

Once your air fryer has finished cooking and the food is ready, promptly dump the contents onto a plate. This will make it easier to clean the air fryer while it’s still hot, which is crucial for efficient cleaning without the need to scrub vigorously.

Step 1: Bring the Air Fryer Basket to the Sink

Once your air fryer has finished cooking and the food is ready, promptly dump the contents onto a plate and take the basket to the sink. This will make it easier to clean the air fryer while it’s still hot, which is crucial for efficient cleaning without the need to scrub vigorously. Don’t be tempted to let that basket leave your hand or it’ll be harder to clean later!

Step 2: Add a Squirt of Soap

Next, add a small squirt of dawn dish soap to the air fryer basket. The soap will help to break down grease and food particles, making them easier to wash away.

Step 5: Swish Around Soap Until it Foams

Using a gentle swishing motion, mix the soap and water in the air fryer basket until it becomes foamy. This will ensure that the soap is evenly distributed and starts breaking down any residue.

Angled view of an air fryer basket in the sink being shaken/jiggled to foam up the soap.
Angled view of an air fryer basket in the sink being swirled/shaken/jiggled to foam up the soap.

Step 6: Pour Out Soapy Water

Once the soap has foamed, carefully pour the soapy water out of the air fryer basket. This step will remove some of the loosened food particles and grease.

Step 7: Rinse and Swish until all Soap is Gone

Fill the air fryer basket with a little water and swish it around to rinse away any remaining soap. This step helps ensure that all soap and food particles are removed from the basket. It’s essential to remove all traces of soap, as any residue could affect the taste of your future air-fried meals.

Step 9: Finishing Up

At this point, if only a tiny bit of oil and water is left over, don’t stress. Just put the basket back in the air fryer, and you’re done! There’s no need to wet your hands further or do any additional cleaning.

However, if there’s a lot of material or something heavy stuck to the bottom of the air fryer basket, you’ll need to use the soft side of the sponge to lightly wipe it up. Remember not to use the abrasive side of the sponge, as this can scratch the nonstick coating.

Finally, insert the basket back into the air fryer. No need to dry the basket with a towel – residual heat in the air fryer will do the trick!

Chopping Air Fryer Fries

Chopping Air Fryer Fries can be a time-consuming and frustrating task. Especially when you’re preparing meals for a large family or group of friends. But what if there was a tool that could make this job a breeze? What if we could cut the cooking time in half and deliver those perfect crispy Air Fryer Fries every time?

Enter the 1/2-inch dicer. This instrumental tool will help any air fryer owner or home cook streamline their prep work. In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits of using a 1/2-inch dicer. From faster prep times and safer cutting techniques to healthier eating and lower food bills. So, let’s get chopping!

1. The Benefits of Using a 1/2-inch Dicer

Do you want a small dice? medium dice? how about a julienne? or fry shapes? A 1/2-inch dicer is a versatile kitchen tool that can be used to dice a wide range of vegetables. We’re talking onions, potatoes, carrots, celery, and more. The dicer consists of a series of sharp blades that slice through the vegetables with ease. It creates perfectly uniform 1/2-inch fries or cube dice in just seconds. This not only saves you time and effort in the kitchen but also produces more consistent results. We’ll ensure that your dishes cook evenly and look beautiful on the plate.

In addition to speed and consistency, a 1/2-inch dicer also offers several other benefits for home cooks. For starters, it’s much safer than using a knife to chop vegetables, especially for those who are less experienced or have limited mobility. The dicer’s blades are encased in a protective frame, reducing the risk of accidental cuts or injuries.

Another advantage of using a 1/2-inch dicer is that it produces less mess in the kitchen. With traditional chopping methods, bits of vegetables can fly off the cutting board and onto the counter, requiring extra cleanup time. With a 1/2-inch dicer, the vegetables are contained, making cleanup a breeze.

2. How to Use a 1/2-inch Dicer

Using a 1/2-inch dicer is easy, even for those who have never used one before. To begin, simply prepare your vegetables by washing them. Then place them into the dicer’s chute. Next, use the dicer’s lever to press the vegetables down onto the blades, which will slice through them with ease. You can adjust the thickness of the fries or dice by changing the blade size. In just seconds, you’ll have perfectly uniform 1/2in fries or dice, ready to be used in your favorite Air Fryer Fries recipes or zucchini recipes.

3. Tips for Using a 1/2-inch Dicer

While a 1/2-inch dicer is a versatile and easy-to-use tool, there are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind to get the best results. For example:

  • Choose the right vegetables: While a 1/2-inch dicer can be used for a variety of vegetables, some work better than others. Stick to firm vegetables like potatoes, carrots, and celery, which will produce the best results.
  • Don’t overfill the chute: While it may be tempting to pack as many vegetables into the chute as possible, this can actually slow down the dicer and produce uneven results. Stick to small batches, and allow the blades to work their magic.
  • Clean the dicer regularly: To keep your dicer in top condition, it’s important to clean it regularly. This can be done with soap and water or in the dishwasher, depending on the model.

4. Putting it All Together: Healthier Eating and Lower Food Bills

Here is the process:

  • 1. Buy inexpensive yet amazing potatoes.
  • 2. Chop the potatoes into fries and store them in the fridge.
  • 3. Make delicious fries ON DEMAND.
  • 4. Pat yourself on the back for SAVING money!

One of the most compelling reasons to use a 1/2-inch dicer is that it can help you eat healthier and save money on your food bill. Potatoes are CHEAP. By quickly and easily chopping vegetables into uniform sizes, you can create healthy, homemade french fries or roasted vegetables that taste just as good as the ones you’d get at a restaurant. Plus, by chopping Air Fryer Fries, you can control the amount of oil and salt that goes into them, making them a healthier option for you and your family.

In addition to healthier eating, using a 1/2-inch dicer can also help you save money on your food bill. With the ability to quickly and easily chop vegetables, you can make your own homemade air fryer fries or roasted vegetables, instead of buying expensive pre-made versions at the grocery store.

A 1/2-inch dicer is an essential tool for any home cook looking to streamline their prep work and create healthy, delicious meals. By saving time, producing consistent results, and reducing the risk of injury, the dicer can make the task of chopping vegetables much more enjoyable and efficient.

So why not give it a try and see how it can revolutionize the way you cook?

In this Neutral Oil Cooking Guide, we aim to dispel these myths and highlight the benefits.

We will also discuss using an oil spout to precisely add the right amount of oil to your dishes. Additionally, we’ll explore the secret behind the delicious taste of restaurant food. Which, no surprise often comes down to their generous use of oil and butter. So, let’s dive into the world of cooking oils and learn how to harness their power to elevate your culinary creations!

Understanding Neutral Oil: Types, Benefits, and Uses

Neutral oils are characterized by their mild flavor and high smoke points. They are ideal for a wide range of cooking techniques, such as air frying, sautéing, and baking. Some popular types of neutral oil include:

  1. Vegetable oil
  2. Canola oil
  3. Sunflower oil
  4. Grapeseed oil
  5. Safflower oil

Each of these oils has its own unique set of benefits and uses. They all share a common purpose. This is the most important part of the article.

  1. to provide a uniform cooking temperature
  2. to prevent food from burning or sticking to the pan

Dispelling the Myths: Oil and Health

It’s important to address the common misconception that oil is bad for your health. Usually, this belief often stems from a lack of understanding about the different types of fats in our bodies. While it’s true that excessive consumption of unhealthy fats, such as saturated and trans fats, can lead to health problems. On the other hand, a moderate intake of healthy fats, like those in neutral oils, is essential for a well-rounded diet. It’s important to use cooking oils correctly. Usually, you only need a small dash or two of oil! Follow this step-by-step Neutral Oil Cooking Guide below to learn more!

In fact, according to the American Heart Association, healthy fats play a crucial role in our bodies. They provide energy, support cell growth, protect our organs, and help our bodies absorb essential nutrients. So, instead of fearing oil, we should learn to embrace it as a valuable component of our diets and cooking repertoire.

The Magic of an Oil Spout: Precision and Control

One of the keys to successfully cooking with oil is using the right amount. Too much oil can lead to greasy dishes, while too little can cause food to stick or burn. This is where an oil spout comes in handy. It allows you to quickly and easily add a precise amount of oil to your pan or dish.

An oil spout typically attaches to the mouth of your oil bottle. It provides a controlled pour that helps prevent spills and over-pouring. This simple tool can make a significant difference in your cooking experience. It’ll give you more control over the amount of oil you use and ultimately lead to better-tasting dishes.

Tips for Cooking with Neutral Oil

Now that we’ve established the importance and benefits of neutral oil, let’s explore some tips and techniques in this Neutral Oil Cooking Guide:

  1. Choose the right oil for the job: Vegetable oil is my favorite. As mentioned earlier, neutral oils have high smoke points, which makes them ideal for high-heat cooking methods like frying and sautéing. When selecting an oil for a particular dish, consider the cooking method and the desired flavor profile, as some neutral oils can still impart subtle flavors to your food.
  1. Preheat your oil: Before adding your ingredients to the pan, it’s important to preheat your oil to the desired temperature. This ensures even cooking and helps prevent food from sticking to the pan. To preheat your oil, simply add it to the pan and allow it to heat up over medium heat for a minute or two. You can test the oil’s readiness by adding a small piece of food; if it sizzles immediately, the oil is ready for cooking.
  2. Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket: When cooking with oil, it’s essential to avoid overcrowding the pan. This can cause the oil temperature to drop and lead to uneven cooking of your air fryer fries. Instead, cook your air frier fries in batches and ensure that there’s space between the pieces to cook evenly.
  3. Store oil properly: To maintain the quality and freshness of your neutral oil, store it in a cool, dark place. Also, keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep the oil in its original container with a tight-fitting lid. When needed, transfer to an oil dispenser with an oil spout. This will help prevent exposure to air, which can cause the oil to spoil more quickly.

The Secret Behind Restaurant Food: Oil and Butter

As mentioned earlier, one of the reasons restaurant food often tastes so delicious is the generous use of oil and butter in their dishes. These fats not only provide a rich, velvety mouthfeel but also help to enhance and carry flavors, making every bite more satisfying and enjoyable.

It’s not practical or healthy to use large amounts of oil and butter in your everyday home cooking. But you can still learn from the pros and use these ingredients strategically to elevate your dishes. By choosing the right oil, using an oil spout for precision and control, and following the tips and techniques outlined above, you can harness the power of oil to create restaurant-quality dishes in the comfort of your own kitchen.

Cooking with neutral oil is an essential skill for any home cook. It provides a stable, even cooking temperature and also contributes to the overall flavor and crispiness of your dishes. By understanding the benefits of neutral oil, dispelling the myths surrounding its health effects, and mastering the art of using an oil spout for precise pouring, you can transform your culinary creations and enjoy delicious, restaurant-quality meals at home. So, embrace the power of neutral oil, and let it elevate your cooking to new heights!

Tender, Healthy, Scrumptious.

I’ll be honest, I was not bit fully convinced about those zucchini craze recipes like zoodles, zucchini rice, and zucchini pasta. And yet, here I am making my own original zucchini fries recipe. My major gripes of most zucchini recipes are with long prep times and a lack of crispy maillardian goodness. Enter the air fryer to fix all that and bring out the best in these little green sticks. You’re probably wondering, how could you possibly achieve all that deliciousness without beef fat, a fryer, and a cardiologist on standby. Well, you’re just going to have to trust me on this one.

Before we dialed it in, our first couple of dinners with home zucchini fries were a bit sad. The green sticks were limp and lacking in flavor, a bit like wet noodles that have sat out for too long. But that didn’t last long. We did a bit of noggin work, made a couple of precise tweaks, and now we’re experts in making Air Fryer zucchini fries that are delicious enough to make you want to inhale all the food on your plate immediately.

So, without forcing you to suffer through another word, here are the secrets to making absolute zingers of Air Fryer zucchini fries.

Air Fryer Zucchini Fries Recipe Highlights:

  • Quick and easy: From prep to plate in under 15 minutes!
  • Healthy alternative: A nutritious and delicious way to indulge in fries guilt-free.
  • Minimal ingredients: All you need is zucchini, steak seasoning, and a dash of neutral oil.
  • Fun Toppings: Feel free to mix up the seasoning or add sauces on top.

Step 1: Prepping the Air Fryer Zucchini Fries

First, take out three to four Zucchini. I’ve found that half a meal is about 2 Zucchini. Give each Zucchini a quick wash in the sink to remove any dirt. Next, you’ll want to cut off the stem of the zucchini and cut them in half. Both small and large size zucchini work well for this recipe.

Step 2: Slicing the Zucchini Fries

Now it’s time to turn your zucchini into fries! To achieve the perfect fry shape, use a 1/2″ fry cutter to chop the zucchini into evenly-sized pieces. This will not only ensure that your zucchini fries cook evenly in the air fryer but also give them that familiar, appetizing appearance.

Step 3: Seasoning and Oiling the Zucchini Fries

Once you’ve sliced your zucchini into perfect little fries, toss them into the air fryer basket. Then, sprinkle two dashes of steak seasoning over the zucchini fries. Using a bottle with an oil spout, give the fries a light dash of neutral oil. The steak seasoning adds a burst of flavor, while the oil helps the zucchini fries crisp up beautifully in the air fryer. After adding the seasoning and oil, shake or toss the basket twice to ensure that the zucchini fries are evenly coated in both.

Step 4: Air Frying the Zucchini Fries

Now that your zucchini fries are seasoned and oiled, it’s time to let the air fryer work its magic. Set your air fryer to cook the zucchini fries for 9 minutes. There’s no need to worry about preheating the air fryer – just set the timer, and you’re good to go!

Step 5: Plating and Enjoying Your Zucchini Fries

When the air fryer timer goes off, your zucchini fries are ready to be devoured! Carefully dump the fries onto a plate, and get ready to savor the crispy, golden-brown deliciousness. Serve them with your favorite dipping sauce(try our very own BBQ sauce recipe) or enjoy them as is – either way, these zucchini fries are sure to be a hit!

These zucchini fries are also incredibly versatile – you can experiment with different seasoning blends or dipping sauces to suit your taste buds. Whether you serve them as an appetizer at your next gathering, pair them with a juicy burger, or simply enjoy them as a guilt-free snack, Air Fryer Zucchini Fries are sure to become a staple in your cooking repertoire.

Step 6: Quick and Easy Cleanup

While the air fryer basket is still hot, clean it using our “no wet hands” method, which only takes 30 seconds. This method is perfect for those who don’t want the hassle of hand washing dishes. Follow the steps outlined in our previous blog post on air fryer cleaning techniques, and you’ll have a spotless basket in no time. You can even clean two baskets at once by using one in each hand.

To start, while the basket is still hot, give one squirt of soap into the dirty basket.

Drummie, Drummie, in my Tummy!

I’ve had drumsticks in a pan, in the oven, in a pot, in an instapot, air fryer, on the grill, you name it! This staple dish has been everywhere in my kitchen over the years and it’s here to stay. I didn’t think the air fryer would be different than other methods but boy was I wrong. Achieving a crunchy crispy skin is can be a bit of an art on the stove and in the oven. But in the air fryer??? it’s Effortless! just as drumsticks should be. Almost impossible to overcook and it comes out juicy every time!

And yet, we still need to achieve Gourmet air fry status with our drummies. For that, we’ll brine them, dust them with an extra special custom spice blend and finish the plating without our very own homemade BBQ sauce.

Chicken Drumsticks
Chicken Drumsticks

Ingredients

Before we dive into the cooking process, make sure you have the following ingredients and tools at hand:

  • 4 chicken drumsticks (3 per person, 4 for larger folk like my 6’3″ self)
  • Taco seasoning
  • Steak seasoning
  • Salt and pepper
  • Neutral oil (such as vegetable, canola, or grapeseed oil)
  • A small bowl for mixing spices
  • An air fryer
  • A meat thermometer
  • Your favorite dipping sauce (we’ll recommend a few later)

Prepping Your Drumsticks

  1. Unwrap the packaging: Carefully remove the packaging from your chicken drumsticks, taking care not to contaminate any surfaces with raw juices. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after handling the raw drumsticks.
  2. Arrange the drumsticks: Place the 4 drumsticks in your air fryer basket.

Seasoning the Drumsticks

To create a mouthwatering flavor profile for your chicken drumsticks, we’ll mix together a custom spice blend that combines taco seasoning, steak seasoning, salt, and pepper. This unique combination of spices will add a bold, savory kick to your drumsticks, making them impossible to resist!

  1. In a small bowl, mix together equal parts taco seasoning and steak seasoning. Then add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. The exact amounts will depend on your personal preference, but a good starting point is 1 tablespoon of each seasoning and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  2. Give the drumsticks one dash of neutral oil in the air fryer basket, just enough to lightly coat them. The oil will help the spices adhere to the drumsticks and promote even browning.
  3. Sprinkle the spice blend over the drumsticks.
  4. Give the air fryer basket a good shake to allow the spices to evenly coat the drumsticks.

Air Frying Your Drumsticks

With your drumsticks seasoned and ready to go, it’s time to start the air frying process. Follow these simple steps to achieve perfectly cooked, irresistibly delicious chicken drumsticks:

  1. Set your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 20min.
  1. After 20 minutes of cooking, use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken drumsticks. The internal temperature should reach at least 165°F (74°C) to ensure the chicken is fully cooked and safe to eat. If necessary, cook the drumsticks for a few more minutes to reach the desired temperature.
  2. Once the drumsticks are fully cooked, carefully remove them from the air fryer basket and transfer them to a serving plate. The drumsticks should be crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, with a mouthwatering aroma that fills your kitchen.
  3. Now it’s time to add some dipping sauces to your plate. Chick-fil-A sauce, Ranch, and Homemade BBQ Sauce are all great options to complement your air-fried drumsticks. You can also get creative and try other dipping sauces, such as honey mustard, garlic aioli, or spicy sriracha mayo.
  4. For a complete meal, serve your chicken drumsticks alongside some delicious side dishes. Some popular options include air fryer fries, coleslaw, potato salad, cornbread, grilled or air fryer zucchini, or a simple green salad.
  5. Lastly, dig in! I am always surprised at how much I enjoy a good drummy.

We can’t imagine a more beautiful thing. Be sure to share this Air Fryer Drumsticks Recipe with your friends!

Get Crispy!

Crispy, Gooey, Delightful.

You’re tired and hungry. You want pizza and you want it now. I’m here to tell you that by following these pro pizza tips, you’ll be saying hello to some perfectly crispy and gooey slices in no time!

It’s simple, you’ll just need to grab the right za, cut it up, cook, flip, cook, sauce, and serve. (NOTE: Amy here, Luke is writing this article but we disagree about the “flip” part of this recipe so I will pipe up in that section to express my disapproval of his wanton ways…okay, back to Luke!)

Both your wallet and your stomach will be thanking you. Your frozen pizza perfection is only 10 minutes away (including cleanup)! The trusty Air Fryer is here to save your day.

Top View of frozen grocery store pizza.
Top View of frozen grocery store pizzas.

Step 1: Selecting the Best Frozen Pizzas

First things first, you’ll need a frozen pizza. Pro Tip: Depending on where you shop, fresh & ready to bake pizzas at grocery stores (pictured above) can be half the cost and IMO are usually better than the frozen aisle offerings. It is just one step closer to fresher ingredients, and one step further than flash-frozen pizzas that sit in the freezer aisle for an undetermined amount of time. If you can find a grocery store that offers this ready-to-bake option, it is definitely worth a try (and as we said, just as cost-efficient, which we are ALL about over here!)

Step 2: Prepping Your Pizza

We recommend cutting your pizza into eight equal slices before cooking. This will also allow you to cook two to four slices at a time, perfect for a quick snack or meal for one or two. Leave it in the plastic so they don’t get freezer burn and take slices out as you need em.

Top View of Frozen pizza cut into 8 equal sections.
Top View of Frozen pizza cut into 8 equal sections.

Step 3: Air Frying Your Pizza: The Perfect Technique

The key to getting a crispy crust and gooey cheese when cooking frozen pizza in an air fryer is to use a two-step process: first, cook the pizza with the crust side down, and then flip it and cook with the crust side up. If you’re making a meal for two, simply use both air fryer baskets to cook four slices instead of two.

(NOTE: Hi, I’m backkkkk. I am Amy and I stand up against people flipping their pizzas toppings side down. Some people who live in this household think that crispy crust is the most important thing, to which I say, NO! Down with the patriarchy!! Put just your pizza face up like a normal person and once sliced, cook for 11 minutes. Don’t listen to their misguided ways, they know not what they do! If you like less clean up and don’t mind a paler crust, join us at Team No Flip! Ahh, Luke is coming back so, just remember us over here when you are fighting the good pizza fight. No flip, no problem!!)

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to air-fry your frozen pizza slices:

Angled View of Frozen Pizza in an Air Fryer Basket.
Angled View of Frozen Pizza in an Air Fryer Basket.

Step 4. Cook crust side down:

Place two pizza slices in the air fryer basket, making sure they are not overlapping. Cook them with the crust side down for 5 minutes. This will help the crust become crispy and firm, giving you the perfect foundation for your pizza.

Angled view of air fryer basket with pizza in it face down.
Angled view of air fryer basket with pizza in it face-down.

Step 5. Flip and cook crust side up:

After 5 minutes, use a pair of tongs or a spatula to carefully flip the pizza slices, so they are now crust side up. Cook for an additional 3 minutes. This will allow the toppings and cheese to cook through and become perfectly gooey.

Angled view of Air Fryer basket with crispy pizza in it.
Angled view of Air Fryer basket with crispy pizza in it.

Step 6. Check for doneness:

After the 3 minutes are up, carefully remove one slice from the air fryer and check for doneness. The crust should be crispy and golden brown, while the cheese should be melted and bubbly. If necessary, cook for an additional 1-5 minutes, keeping a close eye on the pizza to prevent overcooking.

Step 7: Dig in!

When the cooking time is up, give the basket a good shake to loosen the pizza then transfer the sizzling hot pizza slices onto a serving plate. Allow the pizza to cool slightly before enjoying it, as the cheese and toppings can be very hot.

If you’re still hungry, continue cooking the remaining pizza slices in batches, following the same process of cooking crust side down for 5 minutes, then flipping and cooking crust side up for 3-6 minutes.

As you savor your perfectly air-fried pizza, take note of the crispy crust, gooey cheese, and flavorful toppings that come together in harmony. This cooking method not only saves time and energy but also provides a convenient and delicious way to enjoy pizza in the comfort of your own home.

For a complete meal, consider serving your air-fried pizza with a simple mixed green salad, some garlic bread, or a refreshing glass of your favorite beverage. You can also try experimenting with different pizza toppings, sauces (like our very own BBQ sauce recipe), and cheeses to create a variety of tasty combinations.

Step 8: Quick and Easy Cleanup

While the air fryer basket is still hot, clean it using our “no wet hands” method, which only takes 30 seconds. This method is perfect for those who don’t want the hassle of hand washing dishes. Follow the steps outlined in our previous blog post on air fryer cleaning techniques, and you’ll have a spotless basket in no time. You can even clean two baskets at once by using one in each hand.

To start, while the basket is still hot, give one squirt of soap into the dirty basket.

Next, fill the basket with a small amount of water.

Then, swirl/jiggle/slosh the water in the basket until it foams.

After than, pour out the soap foam and briefly rinse the basket in the basket.

Finally, insert the basket back into the air fryer. No need to dry the basket with a towel – residual heat in the air fryer will do the trick!

1. Jalapeño Cheddar Sourdough: A Flavorful Twist on a Classic Bread

There’s nothing quite like the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through your home, and jalapeño cheddar sourdough takes this experience to a whole new level. This mouthwatering bread combines the tanginess of sourdough with the rich, savory flavors of cheddar cheese and spicy jalapeños, creating a heavenly loaf that’s perfect for any occasion.

The key to a great jalapeño cheddar sourdough lies in the crispiness of the cheese. (and also forgetting exactly how much cheese is in this bread) The complex, tangy flavor of sourdough perfectly complements the cheese and jalapeños.

To make this bread, you’ll begin by preparing your dough, incorporating your sourdough starter, flour, water, and salt. Once your dough has developed its structure and elasticity, you’ll add in the star ingredients: a whole bunch of freshly grated cheddar cheese and finely diced jalapeños.

The process of folding the cheese and jalapeños into the dough helps to create beautiful swirls and pockets of flavor throughout the loaf. Once your dough has undergone its final proof, it’s time to bake your masterpiece. As the bread bakes, the cheese will melt and the jalapeños will release their heat. The result is a symphony of flavors that will leave you in a blissful comatoast state after you eat half the loaf in one sitting.

2. Pretzel Buns: A Tasty and Versatile Option for Healthy Weeknight Meals

Pretzel buns offer a delicious and unique alternative to traditional sandwich bread, and they’re surprisingly versatile when it comes to creating healthy weeknight meals. I’m a bigggg fan of the slightly chewy texture and subtle, malty flavor of pretzel buns. Just smell em. I’ll bet you won’t be able to resist!

One fantastic way to use pretzel buns in your weeknight meals is to create gourmet sandwiches. Load up your pretzel bun with lean proteins like grilled chicken or turkey, fresh vegetables, and your choice of spreads or condiments. The hearty texture of the pretzel bun makes it an excellent choice for holding up to even the most generous fillings, ensuring that your sandwich stays intact and delicious from the first bite to the last.

3. A Love Letter to Bread: The Enduring Appeal of this Timeless Staple

Bread has been a staple food for thousands of years, and it’s not hard to see why. There’s something inherently comforting about a warm, freshly baked loaf of bread – it’s the epitome of simple, wholesome goodness. From crusty baguettes to fluffy dinner rolls, bread takes many forms, but one thing remains constant: our love for this timeless favorite.

As a bread enthusiast, I’ve spent some hours in the kitchen, experimenting with different doughs, techniques, and flavors in search of the perfect loaf. The process of bread-making can be both meditative and exhilarating, as you watch your dough transform from a simple mixture of flour, water, and yeast into a beautiful, golden creation that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate.

Bread has the unique ability to bring people together, whether it’s a humble loaf shared among friends and family or a spectacular artisanal creation that serves as the centerpiece of a special meal. Its versatility and adaptability make it an essential component of cuisines around the world, and it’s easy to see why bread has endured as a beloved staple for centuries.

4. Air Fryer Bread: A Modern Twist on a Classic Favorite

Air fryer bread is perfect for those times when your dish needs a little something extra like a side but you forgot to plan and now it’s already ready to eat. In a quick pinch, I like to use the Air Fryer to toast some bread.

If you’re like me you use the air fryer like a microwave. Simply pop a slice of bread or buns into the air fryer, give it a dash of neutral oil, and let it cook for one to three minutes. The result is a crispy, crunchy, side dish that elevates almost any meal. There’s so much potential in side dishes for stews, hotdogs, hamburgers, curries, sandwiches, and more! So grab a slice and let’s get toasty!
